Tips to Keep Your Home Smelling Fresh

Everyone likes to have an inviting home for people to visit.  And one of the things that make our homes welcoming places to visit is a fresh and clean scent.  Here are a few tips to keep those areas of your home that can smell less-than-inviting, smelling great.

  1. The dishwasher can be one of those places that smell musty.  And if you have a dishwasher with a white interior, you may notice that it can become discolored with brown stains.  The main culprit behind both of these problems in rust.  So try this trick.  Run an empty load in the dishwasher replacing your usual dish soap with orange flavored drink mix.  It might sound crazy, but it really works.  Both the stains and the smell will disappear!
  2. Refrigerators can be another troubled spot.  To eliminate less-than-appetizing scents from your fridge use equal parts of baking soda and water and wash down the interior.  Then place an opened box of baking soda inside the refrigerator to keep it smelling fresh.
  3. Front loading washing machines are especially susceptible to musty smells.  Here are two tips to help with this problem.  First, make sure that you leave the door slightly open between washes.  Second, run an empty load using very hot water and vinegar in place of detergent.
  4. Finally, to eliminate less-than-fresh smelling mattresses, place a dryer sheet or two between the mattress and the fitted sheet.  Your mattress will smell springtime fresh!

If you’re like me, you want to make sure that your house smells its best when visitors show up.  By incorporating these easy strategies, you’ll have a fresh smelling house all the time!
