How to Add Interest to Bookshelves

Bookshelves are utilitarian by nature.  But just because they serve a useful purpose doesn’t mean they have to be boring.  In fact, by following these simple tips, you can make your bookshelves one of the most attractive features in a room.

1. Bookshelves aren’t just for books. Adding in pieces other than books goes a long way toward making your bookshelves attractive.  Think objects d’art, small pieces of statuary, even artwork.  Using stacks of books as pedestals goes a step further toward creating an attractive display.  When these things are added to bookshelves, it can make them absolutely swoon-worthy.

2. Artfully arrange books. This can be achieved in a number of ways.  Try lining up books by height, or by jacket color.  Or if you’re looking to create a neutral palette in a room, try lining books up with their pages facing outward rather than their spines.

Remember that less is more.  Make sure that you leave space in your bookshelves.   Don’t fill every square inch with books and tchotchkes.   Leaving a place for the eye to rest will create rhythm and add interest to your shelves.

3. Line the backs of shelves with pretty paper. This simple trick can elevate shelves from ordinary to artwork status.

Do you have bookshelves in need of a facelift?  Try one, two or all of these tips and you’ll be amazed at the difference.  You may just end up as the designated meeting place for your local book club

Great ideas! I’m always feeling like my bookshelves just don’t look like the ones in home decorating magazines. Thanks for the tips!
