Flowerless Gardens

We all love flowers in the garden, but let’s face it: they can be a bit high-maintenance, can’t they? Yes, I know they wear their best clothes to impress—the ruffly dresses, the colorful blouses—but forget to give them enough attention, and they will throw a horticultural temper tantrum. They fall over dramatically and refuse to turn on their charm. Well, if you’ve had enough of their temperamental ways but don’t want to sacrifice their finery in your garden, there are ways around that! Just pay attention to plants that have colorful foliage and alluring textures, and you’re good to go.

This grouping of succulents has everything going for it—contrasting colors, brilliant foliage and incredible textures. If you live in a mild climate, succulents can be your best garden friend. Those living in colder climates can plant them in containers and move them inside for the winter.

Ornamental grasses can add incredible colors and textures in the landscape, and their seed-heads are reminiscent of the flowers you’re foregoing. Add that to the movement they offer, and these plants deliver a triple-punch unmatched by any other plant group.

Ever traveled to a tropical destination? I’m sure you were wowed by the native plants you saw—sure, many of them have incredible blooms, but just as many boast foliage in the widest array of sizes, shapes and colors. Elephant ears, croton, ginger and palms are all great choices.

You don’t need to totally give up flowers in your garden, but if you are weary of their upkeep, try replacing some with a few of these gorgeous alternatives—your garden will be just as beautiful and perhaps even a bit more interesting!
