Market Trends for Casual Living

High Point Market in North Carolina is the largest furnishings trade show where designers and retailers go to see the latest trends and colors in furniture and accessories. This market this past week was no exception.

Several highlights were seen at this market. One is a movement called, “We need a hug.”  “Comforting trends” are sizzling hot and fit right in with a casual lifestyle of ease, informality, authenticity, and relaxation. Natural fibers and sustainable products are being re-invented and recycled having a great appeal to all of us, as well as, a resurgence of nature in design motifs, color and art.  It’s a crazy time out there in the scary world, this way of thinking is giving new meaning to the term, “Cocooning.”

People are embracing the security of their home where life is familiar and fun.

Another desired trend entitled “Gimme Shelter” is growing in popularity especially in our outdoor living spaces.  Combined with the need for a hug, we are seeing the growth of gazebos, pergolas and pavilions as a safe haven for family and friends.

People are going back to basics as they enjoy family gatherings. “Keeping it simple” another direction towards informal picnics and conversation around a fire pit while sitting in cozy club chairs is in vogue.

A crucial key ingredient to investing in people, in our communities and in our future is buying quality “Made in America” products. We all want to feel wholesome and honorable as we shift towards the heart and soul of what makes us a great nation, and buy American made furniture and accessories.

It’s not all relaxation that is in store for us, there will be a revival of the old adage, “It’s 5 O’clock Somewhere” as the market suggested a lot of bar carts and bars, and exciting furniture pieces for entertaining with their entertainment buffet and bistro and bar height tables.  So get ready to party…

The last trend visible at market this year is the reappearance of products from our past, “Going Old School” this reawakening is evident in the all new look and styling of Adirondack seating. Color is playing a prominent role in the comeback of old time favorites.

I’m excited about what is old and what is new, I’ll be embracing these comforting trends in my outdoor living spaces as I spend time with the people that mean the most to me, my family and my friends.
