Art in the Outdoors: Creative Projects for Your Backyard

Anyone can create a cozy outdoor space with the right furnishings—but how do you take it from a catalog-worthy display to something that’s uniquely yours? While not everyone is a brilliant artist creating elaborate sculptures or intricate landscaping projects, there are actually a number of projects you can take on to add some personal creativity to your fifthroom space. The best thing about these is that you might not need to spend a lot for the materials.

If you’ve got a green thumb, you’ll probably enjoy creating your own planter. Just about anything can be used as a container for a small bloom of succulents—from an empty wine crate to even a pair of worn out boots you still love. With a little modifying, you can easily repurpose something to be a small planter to accent your patio. One of the more interesting projects around is one for a vintage typewriter planter. The best thing about it is the way the plants contrast the machinery, which turns it into a work of art.

Did you know that you can create your own lamps? You don’t have to be a master electrician to create them, though. You can find a wide variety of options when it comes to customizing your light fixtures for the outdoors. If you’re using a table lamp for your porch setting, why not try customizing the cover by painting on it or even knitting a cozy for it? On the other hand, you can also add some simple romance by customizing some empty glass sauce jars into candle-lit lanterns.

Water features are always an attractive addition to any garden. But you don’t have to spend lavishly for a grand fountain to sit in the middle of your yard. In fact, you can make a simple fountain out of just about anything you own. All the materials you’ll need are easy to find either around the house or at your neighborhood hardware store.

This is just a sampling of things you can do to add some creative flavor to your fifthroom space. Who knows—you might be able to come up with inspiring creations of your own: from simple drapes for your pergola or a whole garden inspired by Impressionist art.

What sparks your creativity? We’d love to hear your take on art in the garden.
