Warm Vs. Cool

It’s no secret that color can affect your mood.  Therefore, the colors that your choose to surround yourself are more important than you might think.  Basic color theory suggests that cool colors (those on the blue side of the color wheel) are more calming and serene, while warm colors (those on the yellow side of the color wheel) can be more stimulating but are also more cozy and enveloping.  So which is the better choice for a bedroom?  Well, that is really a matter of personal opinion.   To give you an idea of what a warm vs. a cool color palette can do, today I wanted to share with you two rooms, created with the same furniture.  The first is done is a cool palette of blues, while the second is done in a warm palette of browns and reds.  Which is better for a bedroom?  You be the judge.

The first room is wrapped in a variety of cool blues.  The obvious base of the color scheme is the sky-blue walls.  The neutral upholstered beds are dressed in white and accented with blue pillows and throws.  The neutral carpeting is given a boost with the addition of a blue denim rag rug.  A blue barn star, blue denim fabric on the lamp, and blue stripes on the basket liner complete the color scheme.

The second room uses the same upholstered beds, the same dresser and even the same white bedspreads.  The accent colors are what changes in this room, and what gives the entire room a feeling of warmth.  First, the walls in this room are painted a warm tan.  Brown and red accent pillows are added to each bed.  A brown area rug is added to the floor, and the accessories on the dresser are all warm in tone including dark red, brown, and gold.

It’s pretty obvious when comparing the two rooms that a warm vs. a cool palette can give the same furniture two completely different feelings.  So which is better?  Neither.  It’s really just a matter of personal preference.  So the next time you’re decorating your bedroom, take into consideration the way you want the room to make you feel…and pick a warm or cool palette accordingly.
