Using Seashells in Your Home

Nothing says “summer” to me like seashells!  Perhaps it’s because I spent several years living on the East Coast, but my house just doesn’t feel ready for summer until I pull out the seashells.  Today I thought I’d share a few ways to add that summer feeling to your home with those pretty little gifts from the sea.  Don’t have a seashell collection?  Don’t worry. Seashells are readily available to purchase in just about any craft store.  So gather up some seashells and put these simple ideas into action.

One of the easiest and, for me, most satisfying ways to display seashells is in a pretty glass bottle.  A simple, unadorned bottle is the most effective choice because it allows the shells to take center stage.  But really, any clear glass bottle will do.  I personally love this tall, triangular bottle because it is narrow and allows virtually every shell to be seen.Seashell Jar

Another pretty idea is to fill the bottom third of an apothecary jar with shells and then nestle a candle inside.  This particular idea makes a lovely centerpiece at a summer table.  Just be sure that, if you choose to light the candle, you monitor it carefully.

Finally, here’s one of my favorite ways to display starfish.  Find a small frame (I like white frames best), and use it to frame a pretty starfish hot-glued to some sand-colored linen.  Such a fresh and simple look.At least one of these ideas is sure to fit with the décor of your home, and all of them are great ways to bring that summer feeling inside.
