Around this time of year, we often find ourselves inside more often than outside. And, even though it’s warm and cozy, the air inside can get a bit stuffy. That’s why we have developed this list of 5 ideal choices for indoor plants. Each of these plants are rather low maintenance and effective at freshening your air, but they all have a common factor that I’d like to note now- they’re not pet friendly. So, if you choose one of these plants for your home, be sure to keep them out of reach of children and pets. That’s right, these plants do not like to be eaten.
Snake Plant
This plant gets its name from the pattern on its leaves. It has an irregular green banding that looks very similar to that of snakeskin. This plant is low maintenance and can endure droughts. Though, it can survive in low light settings, it actually prefers bright lighting. The Snake Plant is also used to filter chemicals out of the air. These chemicals include trichloroethylene, xylene, formaldehyde, benzene, and toluene.
Pothos
This plant is often referred to as the “Cubicle Plant.” It starts rather small but its vines can grow to be over 10 feet long. Pothos can survive indoors with lower lighting and dry air even though these conditions are less than ideal. This plant also is easy to grow as well as multiply. It can propagate in water, allowing you to have as many as you would like. Pothos filters out xylene, formaldehyde, benzene, and toluene.
Dracaena
This plant is low maintenance and easy to grow. It can adapt to different light environments rather easily, but be sure to keep it out of direct sunlight. It’s a hearty plant that is capable of dealing with indoor temperatures and seasonal changes that other plants may not be as successful in adjusting to. Dracaena filters out xylene, formaldehyde, benzene, and trichloroethylene.
ZZ Plant
This plant grows best in low light environments and is both drought tolerant and low maintenance. Due to its hearty rhizomes, it can store water for weeks at a time. During its growing season of spring and summer, you can water it once a month. In the fall, it goes dormant and only needs watered every 2 months. Another fun note about this plant is that it resembles friendship and prosperity in many cultures.
Rubber Tree
This plant is very low maintenance and can handle underwatering better than overwatering. It is good for people who travel because it can tolerate the lack of attention. The Rubber Tree needs bright light and plenty of space to grow. It removes Carbon Dioxide from the air.
