Nooks and Crannies: Alternate Uses for Closets

Many of us need all the storage we can get in our homes.  And for some of us, closet space is at a premium.  But occasionally, we are lucky enough to have an extra closet that just isn’t needed for storage, or that could be better used in another way.  Here are a few  ideas for ways to transform a closet into something equally as useful, but a little more fun.
A New Office Space
First up, try using a closet as a home office.  This idea is especially useful for people living in compact quarters who really need a dedicated office space.  Double wide closets work best for this, but with a little creativity just about any closet will do.  Simply add a desk and some storage, and you’ve got yourself an effective workspace.
Second, turn a closet into a mini-mudroom.  This clever idea really fits the bill when your house lacks a dedicated mudroom.  Outfit a closet near your home’s main entrance with a bench, shoe storage, and hooks for coats and bags, and you’ve got a perfect spot for the family to leave their outdoor gear when they come in.
Finally, try turning a larger closet into a reading or study nook for the kids.  This closet became a favorite hideout for the kids when it was outfitted with a pint-sized school desk and chair.  Built-in shelves used as a bookcase added to the charm of this miniature reading/study space.
Borrow from the ideas shared above, or come up with some of your own.  With a little imagination, you can dream up a variety of ways to make a seldom-used closet into a must-have space within your home.
