Autumn is upon us (finally), and along with the changing leaves, comes the harvest. One of the staple crops of the fall season is pumpkins. And because the pumpkin is an iconic symbol of autumn, it makes for great seasonal décor. But don’t limit yourself to saving the pumpkin for Hallowee, carved into a smiling jack-o-lantern. By using a little outside-the-box creative thinking, pumpkins can make perfect décor all autumn long.
One of my favorite ways to decorate a pumpkin involves the use of some surprising items not normally associated with embellishing this famous squash: monograms and nailhead trim. Yes, you read that right. Here is a way to create sophisticated pumpkin décor using these two unexpected items.
After selecting a good sized pumpkin, use a word processing program to create your monogram of choice, then print it out in an extra large font.
Cut the monogram out, and place it on the pumpkin where you would like the finished monogram to appear.
The rest of the project is very simple. Just take the nailheads, and press them into the monogram spacing them very close together and leaving no space in between. Once you have created the monogram using your nailheads, simply tear away the remaining paper. That’s it. Now you have a sophisticated pumpkin to adorn your porch all season long.
And one final note: this project works equally as well using faux pumpkins that can be purchased at your local craft store, as it does with real pumpkins. If you’d like to use your monogrammed pumpkin year after year, faux pumpkins are a good option to consider.
