Landscaping Choices Can Be An Extension of Your Design Style

One of the things I love most about the fifth room is that nature is and can be an essential tool to your creative masterpiece.  There are numerous elements in design that can define and detail your style. Why not include the natural landscape and scenery as a flexible tool to add to your plan?  Think of your landscaping choices as an extension of your design style.

By using plants, flowers, and trees as a design element of your outdoor space, the opportunities become endless and easily interchangeable. Here are some inspired ideas:

For a Tuscan or Mediterranean style, go for the classic topiaries.  These provide a clean and tailored look and can come in a variety of groomed shapes and styles, which make them perfect for creating a look that is all your own.  Bougainvilleas add brilliant color and can be an element of fun.  If space allows, add an olive tree or two.  The muted shade of green found on the leaves could be the ideal inspiration or color pop needed to compliment the rest of the design.

The tropical or beach styled outdoor room is appropriate and widely used here in southern California.  No tropical style would be complete without the iconic palm.  The reeded look of a palm can be found in a variety types, looks, and sizes, which provides flexibility for any size yard. Hibiscus flowers and birds of paradise provide vibrant color and an island feel.  Plumerias are a personal favorite of mine that do the same, while introducing an intoxicating tropical scent that will allow you, your family and your guests to take a mental vacation to paradise.

If your style is not quite as defined but you are looking to create an outdoor space that pops, simply add your favorite plants and flowers to your landscape. Bright and colorful flowering plants make any space cheerful and brilliant.  My personal favorites are hydrangeas, daisies, and sweet peas.  Whether your choices stem from color, look, scent, or something else, don’t be afraid to create a landscape that is completely you!
