Fall Decorating in the Garden

It’s hard to drive around town right now without seeing piles of pumpkins, gourds and other signs of fall harvest. Grocery stores, farmers’ markets and even church parking lots are full of these autumn favorites. We’re used to decorating our tabletops and front entryways with these, but what about the garden? Need some inspiration? You’ve come to the right place! Here are some creative ideas to add some harvest flair to your outdoor spaces.

One of the easiest ways to decorate your fall garden is to add a pile of pumpkins around your container plants. After you’re done planting cooler-weather annuals like pansies, violas, alyssum and snapdragons, arrange pumpkins and gourds around the base. But don’t limit yourself to just the tried-and-true orange pumpkins—pick some white (Caspar, Baby Boo), red (Cinderella, Red Warty), blue/green (Blue Max, Blue Lakota) or tiny pumpkins (We Be Little, Munchkin).

Here’s a new twist on putting pumpkins in the landscape—how about lining your beds with them? This is especially effective if you choose one color and variety, like these bright orange ones (pictured below), and a consistent size. This garden has an already rich color palette, with the plantings of croton, coleus and fiery annuals, and it’s finished off perfectly with a stunning line of orange. I’ve seen beds also outlined with white pumpkins, complemented with red flowers and ghostly, silvery foliage like dusty miller and artemesia.

If you have beds with colorful groundcovers, try nestling larger pumpkins into the foliage. It creates a delightful surprise for passersby, and children delight in running around to find the hidden squash. Pumpkins can also be placed on top of the soil in containers—just leave a planting ring around it with enough room for mums, pansies and violas. Add some ghostly silver ponyfoot for a perfect, cascading touch!
