I can barely believe it, but we’re nearing the end of summer. Picnics, gardens, family get-togethers, outdoor activities, swimming—it’s been marvelous. But it’s time to start prioritizing how to pack the most fun, summery activities into the time we have remaining. I read somewhere that August is like the Sunday of summer, and that struck me as very true. So, our end of summer bucket list is packed with great things to experience, most free or inexpensive, because fun doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. Let’s get started!
End of Summer Bucket List:
A Camping Trip is great, outdoorsy fun for just yourself or with others. Communing with nature, campfires, sleeping under the stars, and enjoying nature is nothing but relaxing. Find a local spot, or not so local if you have the time to drive a distance, and enjoy nature!
Visit a Local Park and enjoy the amenities. Pack a picnic, take a book or magazine, take advantage of bocci courts or a sandpit for the kids. Unfurl your blanket under a sunny sky and relax a little. Try a park that isn’t in your neighborhood, explore. You’re never too old for a swing.
Take a Road Trip to Nowhere. Have a day off? Pack your car with snacks and water, dress comfy, and set out on an adventure. Choose a direction, north, south, east, or west, and just drive. Who knows what you will find: an antique store, a beautiful landscape, a fun activity, or a flea market. The world is yours to discover.
Plant a Tree to commemorate the end of summer 2022. Choose a suitable type for your location and add some shade and beauty to your space! Not only that, but it’s great for the environment.
Be a Tourist in Your Own Town. Look online for local attractions, restaurants, shops, whatever you like. And go visit them! Maybe you’ve heard of a great place you haven’t tried out (Jeez, I have to go there one day…), so try it out! We get so used to going to the same places and doing the same things; shake it up.
Host an End of Summer Backyard Party. Enjoy the golden hues of August and throw a fun get together. Some food, some drinks, and friends and family. Don’t let August slip by without a last summer event. Never got around to hanging those outdoor lights (like me…)? Do it, invite some friends over, and enjoy yourself.
Amusement Parks aren’t just for the kids. Find one in your town or a doable distance away. Have fun! Eat the waffle fries and ride all the rides. Some will have end of summer discounted tickets as well.
Outdoor Concerts are the best. A good band, a blanket, and some snacks? That’s a fun evening. Some areas have an outdoor performance center; if you haven’t checked yours out, I highly recommend it. Locally, we have one outside of Pittsburgh and I was able to take my dog to see ballet under the stars a few years back. We both had the best time.
Local Farmer’s Markets provide fresh, seasonal food, sometimes a band or performers, and a great chance to meet folks in your community. You might try some produce or homemade goods that you never have, and your purchases help out independent shops and farms. It’s a win-win.
