Airstream or Caravan… It’s Love at First Drive

That’s right… “Airstream Love.” Or “Caravan Love.” Either way, it is good!

It’s having a passion for summer, a passion for camping, and a passion for getting outside in the sweet summer air… in an AIRSTREAM!

Did you know people buy these (old and new) and decorate them wild and crazy? Not just little curtains and a pillow or two, but all-out, wild remodeling. Be still my heart!

This is creativity at its best. You can paint the outside, add decals to the body, adorn with twinkle lights inside and out, or put on a cute summer awning. Then go wild inside with granny square afghans, colorful rugs, and dishes that are bright and happy. Add a lamp and table cloths, and keep a TIGHT color scheme. I do believe that is the trick!

Click here and here for some decorated caravans with very tight color schemes.

The next best thing to decorating the cabin might be making my quilt using camping fabric. The fabric for the quilt on the cover of my book is by Michael Miller, and I love it!  There are also a bunch of camping images at Sublime Stitching. I can see this on a tote or tea towels. Maybe I’ll use this where I have the novelty fabric in the quilt. Or how about enlarging the shapes and making them appliqué with stitchery? Oooh… Ahhhhh…

And hold your horses – this caravan was a prop for my friend Jennifer Paganelli’s new book “Girls World.” Can you believe it? Look at this!! The caravan was styled by Nancy Geaney and photographed by Tim Geaney. Pure genius!

This is Jennifer at Quilt Market for her book signings. She really knows how to decorate! Check out her company at www.sisboom.com.

So what kind of camping crafts do you do? Want to do? Have done? Tell me and I’ll find links and do a post on it later – we are ALL looking for fun new crafts!

I tend to stitch when out in a caravan as it is a great deal more portable than a quilting project. I have not done it for years but it can be a great way to explore when you have good company!

For years, I have looked at every tiny camper I see parked on the side of the road and wish I could buy it and decorate it. I want an old shiny red pick up truck to pull it and a Singer featherweight to pack inside….so far I got the featherweight! Someday, I’ll be on the back roads, visiting the sites, cafes and fabric shops.
