THREE EASY FALL GARDEN VIGNETTES

You are probably a lot like me—once the heat and humidity of summer has finally ended, you’re more than ready for a change in your garden. I feel invigorated by the cooler, crisp air, and look forward to creating cozy gathering spaces in my outdoor areas. Here are 3 ideas I’ve gathered for quick and easy makeovers, giving your fall garden instant warmth and coziness in under an hour.

One of the easiest ways to morph your outdoor spaces from season to season is with accessories. Add cozy throws and pillows to your benches, switch out the summer tropical seat cushions for ones with more harvest colors, and add patterned outdoor rugs. Bring out the candles for ambient lighting, and invite your friends over for mulled cider or hot toddies!

Clean out those tired summer plants (if you haven’t already!) and add plants in harvest colors. Russet colored mums, orange-and-yellow croton and ornamental cabbages and kale are perfect additions to barrel or rail planters, and add up-close interest to bench planters. Remember to add finishing touches such as handfuls of moss tucked in between the plants—this conserves moisture but also creates an artistic textural interest.

I saw this vignette on a visit to a botanical garden and was instantly smitten! How many times have I cleaned out faded summer annuals from hanging planters, but the cascading plant still looks gorgeous? I don’t want to scrap all of it, but I know the remaining plants will only look good for another month or so. This botanical garden added white pumpkins in the center of planters, and allowed the silver ponyfoot to spill over the edges. This is the simplest, most brilliant season-spanning idea I’ve seen in awhile, and I’ve already recreated it on my own balcony garden.
