Finding Your Design Style

Have you ever had anyone ask you what your design style is?  It can be something that is a bit hard to define.  Perhaps you’re just not sure how to pinpoint what you like.  If you just can’t put a finger on what your design style is, here are a few ideas to help you figure it out.

  1. Study the types of art that attract you.  Do you enjoy traditional paintings, modern art, or perhaps you prefer objects used as art.  The type of art you put in your home is a good indicator of what styles you enjoy.  Attracted to modern art?  The likelihood is that you would feel most comfortable in a more contemporary space.
  1. What is your favorite color?  What colors make you feel most at home in a space?   Believe it or not, color preference is a good way to determine what type of style you are most drawn to.  Clean, crisp, bold colors indicate a tendency toward more contemporary spaces.  Earthy colors often indicate a more traditional style.  And neutrals tend to be a bit more transitional in style.
  1. Now look through all the rooms in your house to see if there is something that you “collect”.  Perhaps you favor a certain type of accessory, a particular motif, or a certain style of chair.  The fact that you are drawn to a particular type of item might be a clue to your hidden style preference.
  2. Finally, if you just can’t decide what style is more you, try one of the many online tools that help you to figure it out.  There are many websites that offer quizzes or visual questions to help you determine the style that is most fitting for you.

And what if you don’t have repeated items in your home?  What if your art collection is wide and varied?  What if you love all different kinds of colors?  Well, this could simply mean that your style is what we like to refer to as eclectic.  And that’s great too.  No need to pigeon hole yourself.  Buy what you love.  Put it together in a way that you love.  Great design doesn’t have to obey the “rules”.  It just has to be a reflection of who you are and what you love!
