If you’ve been delaying your outdoor fall decorations and have a pergola with dead hanging plants and drooping vines, don’t worry: there’s still time to get into the festival fall mood and get that area bright and colorful.
Not a pergola owner? Well, right now is your chance to be one – we’re having a sale through the end of October 2015. It’s free shipping on pergolas priced at $4,500 or more. Whether you currently own a pergola or you’re dreaming of one, check out these five colorful ways to decorate your pergola for the fall.
- Jack-o-lantern: For everyone who’s ever dreamed of living in Halloween Town, this one is for you! Use jack-o-lanterns to create a Halloween theme for your pergola. Visit a craft store and pick up shadow cut-outs of crows, cats and bats to attach to the pergola’s support columns and hang from the top beams.

- Gourds, pumpkins and leaves: Fall gourds, pumpkins and leaves that have changed color all naturally complement each other with their yellow, orange and red hues. Hit up a local farm –there’s nearly 2 million in the U.S. – or try your grocery store to find gourds and pumpkins of different shapes and sizes. And, of course, just head outside to your yard or a city park and gather a few pretty leaves for decorating. Grab a variety and arrange them around the corners of your pergola or even lean an unused rake up against your pergola and top the spikes with small gourds or colorful leaves.

- Mums, mums everywhere: Mums are hardy plants that come in a variety of colors including white, yellow, orange and purple. You could add these in hanging planters from your pergola beams or use containers to surround the base of the pergola.

- Gilded leaves and branches: Give your pergola some bling with leaves and branches that have been painted a metallic gold or silver. You can purchase these online on Amazon or through an independent seller, like on Etsy. You can also do it yourself. Here’s a tutorial. Hang the leaves from the pergola’s top beams and attach the branches to the support columns to get a glowing, shimmering effect.
- Light it up: Lights always make a pergola look warm and welcoming. In the fall, you can hang these lights and get red, yellow and/or orange bulb covers to make the lights season-specific.
