VACATION AT HOME WITH TROPICAL GARDEN STYLE

A couple of years ago, just as the recession was hitting, I had some clients who’d been planning to take a tropical vacation. They longed for the breezy island feel, the exotic surroundings, and lazy days on the beach where there were no watches or appointments to be kept. But, alas, they lost a bit of money when the economy went south, so they changed their minds. However, instead of simply foregoing a vacation, they opted to create a tropical environment in their own backyard—still spending money, but increasing the value of their home at the same time.

Here’s how to get a little of the tropics in your backyard—it might not totally replace a vacation, but any time you can step outside your back door and feel relaxed is good in my book!

Plants: Careful attention to plant selection is a must when creating a tropical feel! Choose plants that have large leaves like cannas, elephant ears, ginger and palms. Plants that flower can have large or small blooms, but forego sweet pastels in favor of shocking brights like purple, orange, yellow, and bright pink. Great flowering plants to incorporate are hibiscus, mandevilla, passion vine, bird of paradise and bougainvillea. And don’t forget textural plants like ferns and succulents!

Water: Want to really feel like you’re on an exotic get-away? Add a water feature! No matter if you’re living on acreage or a simple balcony, the sound and ambiance of water is instantly relaxing. Consider anything from a pond with a waterfall all the way down to a basic water feature in a large glazed pot.

Lounging Areas: Come on, it’s not relaxing if you don’t have any place to lounge, right? If you’re on a budget or have limited space, think a humble hammock with a pillow or a chaise lounge with colorful cushions. If you’ve got more benjamins to invest, create a lounge with built-in seating and bar-like tables. All you need is the Cabana Boy to deliver your umbrella drink and you’re good to go!
