Video Spotlight: How to Build a Shed

The Video Spotlight Series highlights videos from the Fifthroom.com YouTube channel. These videos give you a chance to take a multi-dimensional look at our furniture and structures.

Sheds add value to your backyard tools and furniture. It’s a great addition to protect your lawnmower, garden tools and patio furniture from rough weather, like rain and snow. A shed also makes it easy to grab the tools you need when landscaping or gardening without trekking inside to your basement or other indoor storage area.

And here’s the good news: building a shed is easy! Here’s how to build a shed.

Tools

The tools you need are pretty basic – you probably already have them and if not, they’re easy to find at a hardware store. Here’s the check list:

  • Level
  • Tape Measure
  • Hammer or Air Nailer
  • Tin Snips
  • Utility Knife

Instructions

These are the instructions for building a shed. You can also watch the video below for a quick tutorial.

  1. Order a shed kit.
  2. Lay out the pieces. Assemble the floor joists and floor runners.
  3. Then add the heavy-duty flooring and make sure the floor is level.
  4. Add the first three walls. It’s helpful to have two people for this step – one to hold the wall and one to secure it to the base of the shed. Nail the walls together at the corners.
  5. Now you’ll add the door panel wall. Before you secure it, remove the strip from beneath the doors so they can be opened. Nail the door panel wall in place in the same way you added the other walls.
  6. Top it off with the roof. Align the pre-made rafters with the framing and nail them into the wall.
  7. Apply the plywood roofing sheets. Nail them to the roof rafters.
  8. Add the aluminum roof edges. Nail them to the roof. Cut off the excess with the tin snips.
  9. You’re almost done! Now it’s time to add the shingles to the roof. You’ll need to cut the caps for the peak of the roof.
  10. Finish it off with the door hardware – handles and locks.
