Swinging On The Porch

There’s something so uniquely American about the front porch. Porches first appeared in this country early in the 18th century but it would be 100 or more years before they became an indispensable addition to the American home. Check out the pictures in your old family albums and you will find many, many pictures of family members, eating, relaxing and posing on a front porch swing.

A porch swing has an almost magical quality. When friends and family stop by they always make a beeline to the porch swing. Many a romance has been started on a porch swing, many a meaningful conversation has happened there as well. It’s as though the gentle, rocking motion of the swing puts its occupant in “the safe zone,” affording them the chance to dream and share.

Porch swings have often been used as set pieces in films and on TV shows to evoke a warm, homey feeling. Who can forget Atticus Finch softly speaking to his children on the porch swing in “To Kill A Mockingbird?” More recently, Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin shared a moment on a porch swing in “It’s Complicated.”
